Vorwerk Cockerel and Hens This is a rare German breed developed in Hamburg by Oskar Vorwerk. He succeeded in his aim to breed a dual purpose bird with unique colouring which apparently he choose specifically not to show the dirt.

For families and smallholders the hens have charming personalities. They are bright and active, ideal for free ranging pony paddocks but equally adapted to poultry arks. For busy little birds they are economic eaters, picking up most of their food from their surroundings.

Vorwerk Cockerel Vorwerks make the ideal choice for a smallholder buying day old chicks or young birds. Hens like those above will provide the family with up to 170 cream coloured eggs per season and cockerels make a tasty bird for the table. Chicks are born strangely with their colouring in reverse, a ginger head and black body which changes as the bird feathers up. We have found the chicks quick to grow and in a mixed group the first to try anything new!

These hardy little birds are suitable for first time chicken owners, however they are very good fliers so this needs to be taken into consideration when erecting their pen.
