This attractive bantam was developed in England around 1870 though its larger counterpart is believed to originate in India where it took its name from the Brahma-Pootra river in the 1840's.

The large fowl Brahma,often called the 'King of Chickens' is far too large in size for most family gardens but the bantam Brahma is ideal being calm and docile and doing little damage to the ground because of its feathered feet.

The Brahma is a popular breed suitable for beginners.



Brahma's can be found in many colours but at Haytor Reach we keep a mixed group of Buff Columbian and Buff Columbian Blue Brahma's which are less commonly found than other colours and in our view the most attractive. Brahma's enjoy free-ranging, though will cope with life in a poultry ark if moved daily onto fresh grass preventing their feathered legs from getting muddy. Round and stocky in shape they seldom have the urge to fly. Their only vice it that they enjoy their food and this must be taken into consideration if the are kept in a small area as they soon run to fat. However their intake is much less than a large fowl bird and a they lay very well for a bantam, producing a good sized egg for their size. Brahma hens can become quite tame and will eat corn from your hand. They have cheeky personalities. The cockerels are a little shyer but there is never any aggression. Our two cockerels, PJ and Trousers are always very popular with our younger visitors due to their enormous character and comical walk.
