At Haytor Reach we have a large flock of stunningly marked traditional Light Sussex. This variety of Sussex hen once lead the way in egg laying ability worldwide and became a British classic as being a generally good all- rounder chicken.

Unfortunately not satisfied with it's already superb laying record, the Light Sussex was crossed with other breeds to form the hybrid version of the breed often seen today. The true Traditional pure bred Light Sussex is now classified as 'At Risk' on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust watchlist.

Light Sussex are a described as a heavy breed and apart from their excellent laying abilities are a renowned table bird.

They have a calm and gentle disposition and are very robust, tolerating low temperatures and even snow! Being a heavier bird they are not inclined to fly much and their friendly nature makes them easy to catch and handle.

Anyone wishing to naturally hatch some fertile eggs will find that Light Sussex hens make wonderful mothers.

Light Sussex are are excellent choice for beginners, families and smallholders alike.
